The Welland Canal Memorial monument
was unveiled in 2002 to commemorate the hard working people
from across Canada and around the world who came to Niagara
to build the canal. The monument reminds us of the importance
of multiculturalism to Welland's development in the past,
present and future. The City of Welland, and the Niagara peninsula
as a whole, has prospered thanks to the efforts of the canal
builders.
Renowned artist and sculptor Bas Degroot designed the fountain
and bronze statues, however, due to his untimely passing he
was unable to see it come to fruition. Mylinda and Bill Jurgenson
completed the five bronze statues.
